Genesis 38:8-9 NRSV
“Then Judah said to Onan, “Go in to your brother’s wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her; raise up offspring for your brother.” But since Onan knew that the offspring would not be his, he spilled his semen on the ground whenever he went in to his brother’s wife, so that he would not give offspring to his brother.”
His brother was dead.
His sister-in-law was now widowed.
Per law, he was supposed to step in, not only to “validate” her,
But to continue the legacy of his brother.
But, he wanted his own legacy.
And, that would only happen with his own wife.
So, he chose not to keep his brother’s name going.
But, that didn’t stop him from taking advantage of the situation.
He obviously was not married.
And had no children of his own.
For if he was and did, it would not matter what happened to Tamar’s children
Not unless that took away from him somehow.
Either way, here was the perfect opportunity for him to have pleasure but not have the responsibility of what may come.
Now some could argue that him spilling his semen was an act of resistance.
But, if that be the case, why do it reportedly?!
The passage says he spilled his semen WHENEVER, which means it wasn’t just one time.
It was multiple times.
Onan had NO problem using Tamar for his pleasure.
But, he wanted none of the responsibility.
His entire act was selfish.
It was all about him.
He didn’t care about tradition.
Law did not matter.
He couldn’t care less about what happened to his brothers legacy.
And, his sister-in-law was nothing more than his object of affection to quench his fire.
(Coming To America joke)
The same we do with people now.
Instead of restoring the Tamars when life has left them alone,
We take advantage of them for our own benefit.
We create laws and traditions that make it Ok to pass them along.
Who have we Tamared?!
Who have we used for our pleasure but walked away from the responsibility?!
Who did we use just enough to get to the peak but pulled away leaving behind disappointments and rejections?!
Who are the Tamars in your life?
